HPU Names Ashley Holleran The 2010 Haverty Cup Recipient

Ashley M. Holleran, a senior majoring in home furnishings with a minor in interior design in the The Knabusch-Shoemaker International School of Home Furnishings and Design at High Point University, was recently presented with the 2010 Haverty Cup.

The award was presented to Holleran in Norton Hall on April 16 by Steve Burdette, executive vice president of Haverty Furniture Company stores and Scott Miles, vice president of stores and development at Haverty Furniture Company.

Holleran, a native of Peabody, Mass., has consistently scored high in classes throughout college – her overall GPA is a 3.86. She has been an active member of HPU’s women’s soccer team, and was also a Millis Scholar Athlete and on the Big South Presidential Honor Roll during all four years at HPU. Holleran also was the recipient of the 2009 Furniture Fellowship Endowed Scholarship. She also has participated in the Big Brother Big Sister program.

Upon graduation, Holleran will work with Haverty Furniture in Pineville, NC.

"Ashley is an outstanding student who is sincerely interested in a career in the home furnishings industry," says Dr. Richard Bennington, Paul Broyhill professor of home furnishings at HPU. "Her grades are consistently among the highest in each class, and she is serious about learning. Her work ethic and creative thinking will be an asset to her in her career. We are proud that she is our 2010 recipient of the Haverty Cup."

Holleran will receive a $2,500 cash award and an engraved replica of the Haverty Cup. Her name will be engraved with the names of previous winners on the Haverty Cup, which is kept on permanent display at HPU.

The Haverty Cup was established in 1988 by Rawson Haverty Sr. to annually honor the most outstanding home furnishings graduate of HPU. Haverty established the award to encourage students to pursue a career in the home furnishings industry.

Rachel Sturm receives 2009 Haverty Cup

HIGH POINT, N.C., April 24, 2009 – Clarence H. Ridley, chairman of the board, and Steve Burdette, executive vice president for stores, at Haverty Furniture Companies, Inc., presented the 2009 Haverty Cup to Rachel E. Sturm, a senior at High Point University, at the Eleanor Horsey Ridley Rose Garden on the HPU campus on April 24, 2009.

Sturm, of Summerfield, N.C., will graduate from HPU in May with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Furnishings Marketing. At HPU, she has earned a 3.4 overall grade point average, with a 3.9 in her major, out of a possible 4.0. She has been active in a number of organizations on campus, including Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity and the Chapel Choir, and has served as president of the all-female a cappella group Petal Points. Sturm was chosen by the HPU faculty to be a member of the Phillips School of Business Student Advisory Board. She is also skilled in writing and speaking Spanish.

Sturm has confirmed her interest in a career in the home furnishings industry through working with the High Point Furniture Market and participating in the WithIt Day of Mentoring, and is currently employed as a salesperson at a local retail furniture store.

Interior Design Students compete in NEWH contest

Four High Point University Interior Design students recently competed in the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality (NEWH) student competition.

Their participation was part of a combined student course project for INT 428 - Contact Design II - and INT 499 - Interior Design Senior Seminar.

"Although they did not place, we were able to submit two very strong presentations," said Professor Stephen Huff. "We are very proud of our students' work."

Davis wins design scholarship

Skylar Davis, a junior from Creedmoor, N.C., majoring in interior design at High Point University, was recently awarded the annual High Point Design Center Foundation 2008-2009 Scholarship Award.

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded yearly to an outstanding student who is majoring in interior design – and Davis is a prime example of that.

"Skylar is an outstanding student who is a joy to teach in class," says Stephen Huff, assistant professor of interior design at HPU. "She exemplifies the standards expected of graduates entering the industry. The Interior Design program is fortunate to have this caliber of student."

Davis, who was awarded the scholarship on Feb. 4 during a networking dinner, plans to focus on residential design upon graduation.

Michelle Johnson Peoples wins 2008 Haverty Cup

Steve Burdette, senior vice president of operations at Haverty Furniture Companies, presented the 2008 Haverty Cup to Michelle R. Johnson (now Peoples) in April 2008.

A native of Lexington, N.C., Peoples graduated in May 2008 from High Point University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Furnishings Marketing and Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design.

Upon graduation, she joined Steiner Design Interiors in Raleigh, N.C. While a student at HPU, she received the prestigious Celia Moh Scholarship for two consecutive years, as well as many other honors.

Davis takes Honorable Mention in design competition

Skylar Nicole Davis of Creedmoor, N.C. a Junior Interior Design student at High Point University, won Honorable Mention during the Student Project Competition at the 2008 International Interior Design Association's "Student Design Days" in Charlotte, N.C. on Oct. 2 and 3.

"I was totally surprised when I won," Davis said. "I think the judges thought it was unique in that it showed so many different ways you can display samples of materials."

There were more than 30 display boards entered in the competition from college students. Fifteen High Point University students and two faculty members - Dr. Elizabeth Dull and Steve Huff, attended the two-day event, which featured:

* A student luncheon with industry panelists discussing interviewing, portfolio requirements and job-hunting techniques;
* Tours of 12 showrooms and companies within the Charlotte area;
* Networking opportunities with industry professionals;
* Roundtable discussions on a variety of topics; and
* Participation in the "IIDA Design Olympics."

Taylor wins 1st Interior Design Scholarship by HPSA

In 2007, High Point University student Jessica Taylor won the High Point Design Center Foundation’s first Interior Design Scholarship from Jeanne Glenn of the High Point Showroom Association.

The scholarship will be awarded annually by the association, which established the foundation in 2005. The association plans to promote residential interior design as a viable career choice and make High Point a year-round destination for designers.
