Design major and her sorority win awards at National Convention

HIGH POINT, N.C., July 15, 2009 - Kappa Delta sorority at High Point University has something to cheer about - the chapter was recently given prestigious awards at the Kappa Delta 2009 National Convention.

The chapter received the Achievement Award and the Academic Excellence Award at the convention, held June 27 through July 1 in Orlando, Fla. Kappa Delta President Brittany Loomis (Interior Design Major), Treasurer Jean Morrow and chapter member Margaux Cote were on-hand to accept the awards.

The Achievement Award means the chapter is one of the top 30 chapters in the nation. Chapters that win this award meet a variety of criteria, including maintaining a high level of campus prestige and involvement, hold an annual "Shamrock" event, maintain a high chapter grade point average and more.

The Academic Excellence Award recognizes chapters that equal or exceed the all-women's average on their campus, and rank first or in the top 20 percent in the Panhellenic ranking.

"I loved having the opportunity to represent our chapter at the National Convention," Loomis says. "I'm so proud of all the work everyone has done to maintain our high caliber of class and excellence. I had an amazing time and learned a lot, and am so excited to share all of the great news and information with the chapter this fall."

Experiencing the best of market

High Point University's Home Furnishings & Design students Molly Rice (right) and Brittany Loomis gain valuable experience by working at Kincaid Furniture's "Laura Ashley Showroom" during the International Home Furnishings Market, Oct. 20-26, 2008.

Interior Design Students Meet World Famous Designer Michael Payne

Professor Jess Sisk and several of our Interior Design students at High Point University met Interior Designer Michael Payne, host of the popular "Designing for the Sexes" show on Home & Garden TV (HGTV).

He was visiting High Point during the International Home Furnishings Market in October to introduce his dramatic new upholstery line, the Michael Payne Collection through Lazar Industries.

The students even had the opportunity to "vote" on their favorite piece in the new collection and try to predict which would be the most popular seller during market.

"The Michael Payne Collection sold very well," said Dave Sowinski, president and CEO of Lazar Industries. The winner of the student contest was a student from Randolph Community College, who picked out the Phaedra, a leaf-shaped sofa, which was the best-selling piece at market.

The designer had this to say about his collection, "My newly licensed upholstery collection with Lazar features clean, simple, unadorned contemporary lines with purity of design. Each silhouette was inspired by my real life experiences in solving design problems between the sexes, while making the outcome appeal to both sexes."

The High Point University students had a great time hearing Michael Payne talk and Professor Jess Sisk commented that the designer is just as lively and entertaining in person as he is on the show!
